Job Vacancies

Application Guide

Thank you for your interest in applying for a vacancy with the Port of Brisbane Corporation. The following information has been put together to provide you with an overview of the recruitment process for the Corporation.

Selection Process

The selection process usually involves a written application, an interview, a psychological assessment, a pre-employment medical and on occasion a second interview.

Position Description

This document provides you with information about the job such as the purpose, the duties, the reporting relationships, the organisational environment and the selection criteria.

The selection criteria outline details of the skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform the duties of the job. As part of your written application you should attempt to address all selection criteria as you will be scored on suitability or compatibility with the selection criteria. Interview questions are based on the selection criteria.

Rating Process

Performance during the selection process is assessed and rated by the selection committee against a pre-determined scale.

Written Application

The objective of your written application is to convince the selection committee that you are the best person for the job. Your written application will be assessed by the selection committee and rated accordingly. The applicants who score highest will be shortlisted and given the opportunity to be considered further.  (Please submit Word or pdf documents only.)

It is recommended that you include the following information in your written application:

  • an application for the position. This may be as simple as a one-page letter
  • a concise statement describing how you meet each of the selection criteria as specified in the position description (100 - 150 words per criterion)
  • a resume or Curriculum Vitae outlining a brief summary of your work experience, including where you have worked and dates, jobs held during your period of employment and major duties performed
  • the names and contact numbers of at least two referees who could provide an objective assessment of your work performance

The Interview

The Port of Brisbane Corporation uses behavioural interviewing to assess its candidates at all levels across a range of positions.  Behavioural questions are designed to allow the interviewee to draw from real life examples that best illustrate their competencies for the particular position.  The questions are based on the Key Selection Criteria found in the Position Description.  The selection panel is looking for how accurately the interviewee can describe a situation in relation to the selection criteria.  When answering a behavioural question, describe the situation or task, the actions you took and the result or outcome.

It is important to prepare for your interview by reviewing the range of experiences you have collected from your career and how these experiences relate to the selection criteria.

This is a panel interview involving at least three people.

Psychological Assessment

Psychological Assessment is used as part of the recruitment and selection process. Not all candidates will necessarily progress to this stage.

Psychological Assessment provides objective information about an individual’s work style, their strengths, motivations, work preferences and values. These can then be considered in relation to the Corporation’s culture and prospective role-fit. There will be a series of assessments that are related to the competencies required for the role.  More information is provided to candidates at interview.

Pre-employment Medical

A pre-employment medical is required prior to employment with the Corporation.

Referee Checks

Referees of the highest-rating candidate will be contacted before the selection process is complete to verify the information gathered about the candidate’s ability to meet the criteria. This information will be used to supplement the final selection decision. If contact with your current supervisor will cause a problem, please advise the committee accordingly.

Qualifications

Any qualifications considered necessary for the position may be verified with the issuing authority before appointment.

After the selection process

Once the selected candidate has been appointed, both the appointee and all unsuccessful candidates will be notified as soon as possible.
